A brief historical summary:
* Sakai, owner of 3DX, opens a virtual grid based on Second Life client and OpenSim server software-- OpenLife Grid. Wayfinder Wishbringer, founder of Elf Clan, joins OLG approximately one month after it opens.
* OLX, operated by Osiris Indigo, creates a blog site on Ning, ostensibly for the purpose of providing members of OpenLife Grid (OLG) a place to blog and exchange information and experiences.
* Many people join his system, believing his is a 3DX-approved site (3DX is the sponsor company of OLG). There are no statements on the blogsite to indicate otherwise. Osiris claims plans and authorization to become the "SLX" (a virtual marketplace) of OLG. Financial agenda is thereby established, indicating OLX may not prove to be an unbiased board. Regardless, for some time Osiris appears to run the board in an unbiased manner.
* Wayfinder purchases a sim on OLG, "Terra". Peter Lioncourt (Elf Clan Eldar) purchases three additional sims for use by Elf Clan. Extensive building and rentals are set up on these sims. Several members of Elf Clan purchase sims of their own.
* In a massive move to new servers, 3DX fails to properly archive and backup data. As a result inventory is lost for thousands of users. Instead of admitting this fact, Sakai, owner of OLG, claims it will be soon restored. It is evetually discovered he has no way of doing so.
* Elf Clan member Freyja Bailey rents a major sim portion from an OLG member and builds extensively on that sim. Without warning that sim is shut down, her builds destroyed. Sakai informs Freyja if she purchases a private sim, he can restore archives of her builds to that sim. Believing him, she does so. Sakai does not restore her builds. After several emails directly to Sakai over weeks of time, Freyja eventually gives up and starts rebuilding from scratch. It is later discovered that Sakai has no archives of the sim and no intent to restore her builds. Freyja reports feeling defrauded. (Our opinion: she WAS defrauded).
* Customers begin to have sims destroyed without prior warning from 3DX. This largely remains unknown for a short period of time.
* Sakai begins to develop a reputation for ignoring customer support tickets, failing to keep promises and misrepresenting his board to newcomers.
* Without warning or notice, Terra is destroyed by 3DX. Sakai's claim: failure to pay sim fees. Upon examination, it is discovered that 1. OLG has no automatic billing system, nor automated subscription/billing to PayPal. 2. 3DX has nothing in place to notify sim owners when payment is due. 3. 3DX fails to contact sim owners when payment (unknowing to them) becomes past due. 4. Sakai and his employees have a policy of shutting down sims without any notice to the sim owner and without attempt to contact the owner to acquire payment. When this is discovered and Sakai confronted with these facts, his attitude is apathetic. No effort is made to correct such an unprofessional situation.
* Following Sakai's employment of a new "sim management" person, numerous sims are shut down in similar manner, without any attempt on the part of 3DX to contact unaware sim owners. No effort is taken by Sakai to curb that practice, who confirms that such is official company policy. In addition it is discovered that payments made by PayPal are not being credited properly to accounts, further threatening sims.
* Discovering these things, Wayfinder breaks ties with Sakai and publishes these facts on both the Elf Clan and OLX Ning sites. These things are discussed repeatedly in various blog posts. As time passes and more of Sakai's misdeeds come to light, these are added to the postings.
* Osiris of OLX begins quietly, without notice removing posts exposing Sakai's activities. He asks Wayfinder to not post "off topic" responses on other folk's sites. Wayfinder replies his posts have been counterpoints, not "off topic" as Osiris claims. Nevertheless, he cuts back on responses to other blog posts where "relevance to topic" might be questioned by Osiris.
* Without warning, Wayfinder is banned from OLX. This is done without prior notice or explanation. When members of Elf Clan and OLG contact Osiris to find out why, they are given differing stories.
* Edward Griffith posts a respectful blog on OLX factually exposing the accounting practices of 3DX, including pertinent data. He is told by Osiris that such information does not belong on OLX and his blog is removed.
* Edward posts another respectful, factual blog on OLX objecting to the policy of removing pertinent, factual information regarding how OLG is abusing its customers.
* OLX representative Macphisto removes a follow up post to Edward's blog, claiming it is "trolling" the board. Elf Clan users respond the post was factual presentation of information, not "trolling".
* Elf Clan member Koni Lanzius posts a respectful inquiry regarding the need for documentation and evidence by OLX proving its claims regarding posts to their board, including documentation supporting the contradictory claims made for banning Wayfinder.
* Macphisto responds to her post by personally attacking her in abusive and sarcastic manner.
* During a 24 hour period, there are numerous posts demanding that Macphisto and Osiris provide documented evidence of increasingly-apparent slanderous claims against Elf Clan members. No evidence or documentation is forthcoming.
* In his postings, Macphisto plagarizes a large chunk of copyrighted material from Elf Clan's official website. When he is informed of such, he brushes it off and refuses to remove the post.
* Macphisto continues to personally attack Koni, misrepresenting information and focusing on irrelevant information. Osiris, rather than moderating his comments, joins in by posting-- in all capital letters-- what was considered by most as a "livid rant".
* It is pointed out to both Osiris and Macphisto that users have every right to present suggestions for legal handling of abusive behavior by a business-- including contacting the Better Business Bureau and publicly speaking out against such abuse. These statements fall on deaf ears.
* OLX makes the mistake of contacting Eldar Peter Lioncourt and demanding that he moderate the posts of Elf Clan members on the OLX site. Peter refuses, tells them to handle their own problems, and duly cancels his membership to OLX.
* Wayfinder Wishbringer "goes business" and contacts Osiris Indigo in professional role, citing the breach of copyright and demanding removal of the offending post. Failure to do so would result in Elf Clan filing a DMCA with Ning, citing OLX as the offending site. Osiris is also informed that his company is bound by the laws of the United States and that any further slanderous and libelous activities by his company toward Wayfinder or Elf Clan will be met with appropriate action.
* The next day, all Elf Clan members involved in that debate are banned from OLX. Macphisto, despite his unfactual and abusive posts, remained a member of that blogsite. The entire blog post is deleted, removing all online record of unethical or illegal activity by Osiris and Macphisto.
* Peter Lioncourt, fed up with the attitudes of Sakai/OLG and the offensive tactics of OLX, publicly announces all Elf Clan sims will be removed from OpenLife Grid as of April 2009.
-- End of summary. Commentary follows. --
It has become more and more obvious that OLX is employing a policy of banning those who disagree with the opinions of owner "Osiris Indigo", or who openly expose unethical activities of Sakai, 3DX and OpenLife Grid.
Members are banned not for harassment, or trolling, or insulting other members, but simply for having the courage to speak out against unethical and illegal practices employed by 3DX in the operation of that board.
Most alarming of these bans was user Edward Griffith, who did nothing more than respectfully state his opinions in a factual and responsible manner, as well as the banning of Koni Lanzius, who left all of two messages, both factual in content. Following is a word-for-word quote of Edward's posts, along with the abusive responses posted by OLX representative Macphisto:
EDWARD GRIFFITH BLOGGED:
Yesterday I posted a blog that commented STRICTLY on the business practices of 3DX and thier running of OLG. It did not criticize individuals, it did not demean the organization. it was a factual account of errors in their system.
This morning I received this:
At 3:33pm on March 22, 2009,
Osiris Indigo said…
While your points maybe valid or not OLX can not be the place for discussion concerning payment matters and impressions of business roles and action these are discussions for the relevant party’s and OLG so this post will be removed in 2 Hours totally not something anyone can deal with here at OLX
Ok fine - but if commenting on a business is not ok to discus "business roles" - by what stretch of the 2 faced sword is it ok to leave posts on Linden Labs activities, and on Second Inventory up and even contribute to them?
Without further explanation, this disappointing turn would seem like a double standard. We can cheerlead and spout pablum about OLG, but any criticism of the company, even with the intent of pointing out correctable flaws in it and bringing those to all of our attention is forbidden on MY page?
Where is the written policy that states we must only applaud, and can never be critical? Any parent will tell you that that praise is important in raising a child, but that criticism is how they learn and grow. If we are to be forbidden to criticize, we doom the very thing that is mistakenly being shielded from a true view by our censorship. Who does this phantom policy protect? it certainly damages OLG and severely damages OLX.
Robust and reasoned discussion is vital to the continued survival of OLG. I do not pretend to be presient. All I can do is apply 35 years of real world business consulting and marketing experience to the situation. If someone finds my analysis in error, let them have the opportunity to point out where and why. I like OLG - and would love to be proven wrong.
Discussion can contain many points of view without becoming a flame war. Flame wars SHOULD be moderated. Open and frank discussion should NEVER be moderated.
OLX associate Macphisto responded to Edward's and other's posts in a blatantly insulting and attacking manner. Following is an example of Macphisto's offensive attitude toward Koni Lanzius:
Gee, forgive me if I find your views a little less then genuine.
BTW, does the elf clan code not extend behind the kingdom's walls?
I am a bit confused what all the butt hurt is about. The ever so honorable and all knowing grand poobah of how to run a business said we were small potatoes, etc etc. What is with all the effort?
Oh, and btw.. that was a play on your own code of honor that I was quoting up there. Maybe you haven't read how your clan expects you to behave and didn't realize it.
Note: If this was a post from just another member, it could be discounted as nothing more than sarcastic and immature trolling. However, Macphisto is an official representative of OLX. Such posts cross the line of professionalism into blatant abuse of customers... and attack on their right of freedom of opinion and freedom of speech. OLX had been presented as a PUBLIC board for the use of members of OLG. Membership was open to anyone who applied (as opposed to closed and requiring approval). Claims that it was a "private blog site" did not stand up to scrutiny. It had not been presented as such to its members.
Despite Macphisto's abusive and disrespectful attitude, Edward still continued to reply politely. In response to a post from Macphisto accusing the posters of being "newbies" on OLX with the intent of disrupting the board, Edward responded:
Macphisto, Thank you for the clarification. It is appreciated. For your information, I am not a newbie here. I have been a member here since November.
My original post was strictly concerned with business policies at OLG. As it is the basis for discussion here, and it has been removed here, it might be helpful to read it before commenting further on my above post. For your convenience, it can be found in it's entierty here on Ning.
While I freely admit to having a strong point of view - my only agenda is to see OLG survive and thrive.
You apparently disagree on the way to best do that, Good. I respect your rights to those views.
My point remains - and I encourage you to respond to that. As users of OLG should we not hold OLG accountable for it's actions? Let me stress and repeat for those who are confusing this with a troll post - I am confining my crtiticisim strictly to company actions that are recorded and documentsed. I am not assigning motives to those actions. I am not blaming individuals for anything. As stated, I find the individuals likeable and charming.
Company actions and company policy are worthy of discussion for two big reasons, first they are damaging to the company, and second, by extension to OLX. So if you disagree with my contentions, please educate me on why. How is not having a professional accounts receivable system and erasing sims as a result a good thing? I look forward to your elucidation.
While you are at it please explain how commenting on that lack is in any possible stretch of the imagination "unfreindly" to the pople of this board. Corporate policy and discussion critical of those decisions has been encouraged and participated in when that company is Linden Labs or Second Inventory. Why is 3DX and OLG given special treatment?
During the entirety of that blog discussion, Macphisto (officially representing OLX) continued to insult and slander Wayfinder, Elf Clan, and the members of Elf Clan posting on that blog. The date of this blog, Osiris banned Edward and others, effectively removing that entire post and the evidence of his and Macphisto's responses there, yet saw fit to leave Macphisto a member of that site.
Summary
I'm sure these facts regarding Osiris/OLX and Sakai/OLG come as no surprise to many people. I think few would believe this is the way to run a professional, honest business. I present this information here not to continue the "battle"... but to end it. The abusive practices and polices of both OLX and OLG are now established and documented. I believe our members vindicated both me and Elf Clan in the only honorable way possible: courageously standing up for what is right-- with the result of the leaders of OLX publicly exposing their abusive attitudes. Basically, Elf Clan gave OLX enough rope to hang itself... and it did.
