Elf Clan Social Network

Addendum 3-24-2009. By recent decision of the Eldars of Elf Clan, based on evidence and advice by Elf Clan members who were asked to provide feedback, Elf Clan has abandoned OpenLife Grid due to allegedly unprofessional, unethical and illegal conduct of the host company 3DX. All intents to "migrate" or otherwise support OpenLife Grid have been cancelled. This blog is left standing for purposes of historial interest.

=====

As many of our members are aware, Elf Clan is preparing to migrate to a different virtual platform. This doesn't mean we'll be leaving Second Life altogether; it does mean SL will no longer be our focus-- and that we won't be paying Linden Lab $14,500 a year.

This document includes information that will be of use to you in the migration. This is a "slow migration"... planned over the next six months. By June 1, 2009, we plan to be totally migrated. So there is no rush, no emergency, no reason for alarm. DON'T PANIC.

THE MIGRATION

Here is some basic info to help you adjust to the migration:

* Go to http://OpenLifeGrid.com and register. Your user name is your email address.
* Allow about 15 minutes between registration and your first log-in.
* During this time, visit the Blogsite and join the Elf Clan group: OL Elf Clan Group
* Download the client software.
* Log in using your avatar name and password
* In the location under your avatar name, enter either ElvenHeart or ElvenGlen .

You should be able to log in. Understand that logging in can sometimes be glitchy. Sims are crashing somewhat regularly, users are crashing repeatedly, and they still haven't gotten all the bugs worked out by a long shot. It's somewhat like SL was 4 years ago. Still, we all survived that growth period on SL and we'll likely survive it on OL.

What We're Doing Now
We're right now preparing the lands for habitation and rental. We believe you will be very, very pleased with our new rental prices. See OpenLife Rentals.

We're not going to force anyone in Elf Clan to migrate to OpenLife; we'll let individual members do so slowly, according to their own time frame, as they become accustomed to the idea. Some folks will likely use both systems, retaining lands on SL while setting up new ones on OL. Some may decide to not migrate at all; that is their option and right, with no dishonor. We do hope though that the majority of our members see the advantages in migrating to a more user-friendly system.

The goal at this time is to be fully migrated by June 1, 2008, a full month before Linden Lab hikes sim prices by 67%. At that time, we will begin closing down all of our Open Space sims and likely one of our full sims as well (most likely the one that we'll retain on SL will be ElvenMyst, although even that may be in a greatly reduced format). We still have a lot of decisions to make in that area and our plan is not yet fully formed.

There are several things for Elf Clan members to remember:
1. Don't panic. This is going to happen over months, and no one is going to wind up without a home In fact... we foresee a whole lot MORE of our members being able to afford homes on OL.

2. There is no need to stop renting Elf Clan lands on SL. We have several months before we intend to shut down sims. That gives folks several months to play and enjoy their rental lands. Abandoning rental lands will just force us to shut down sims that much more quickly. June is 6 months off. We have plenty of time. No rush, no emergency.

3. We ARE planning on eventually migrating to OpenLife... so it would be good for Elf Clan members to register there and become acquainted with the system ahead of time. It is very, very similar to Second Life. There is even a third-party computer program designed to help you port your full-perm inventory items over to the new grid.

4. Linden Lab thinks their Open Space sims are worth $125 a month; we're going to make it very clear that they are not... at least not to us.

5. While Elf Clan appears to be the first major group to officially make such announcement, we are now not the only group to do so. As of this writing, more than 795 sims have been closed on Second Life. OpenLife already has 35,000 members (which is more than twice the population when I first joined Second Life) and they report they are selling so many new sims they are having trouble keeping up with the orders. This price-gouging decision by Linden Lab has caused a lot of people to consider alternatives. Unfortunately for their bottom line, Linden Lab made this decision just at the time when alternatives are available. OpenLife is just one of some two dozen Open Grid companies... with undoubtedly many more to follow. We are about to see the dawn of a new VR age out from under the monopolistic control of one company.

ADVANTAGES and DISADVANTAGES
I'll list the disadvantages first... then the advantages. We don't wish to sugar-coat it at all.

Disadvantages:
* OpenLife is a young platform. It's not in "beta" stage... it's still in development stage. There is still a lot that isn't working and bugs are everywhere.
* Crashes are common and often. You'll have to be very, very patient with the platform. If you get too frustrated... just watch TV or a DVD or read a book or even play Second Life for a while. : )
* Inventory is still a little glitchy. But then... it's glitchy on Second Life too, so that should be nothing new.
* You will not be able to use your Second Life inventory (except for items that are full perm which you may choose to port over using third party software).
* It will at first be frustrating. That also, should be nothing new.
* You will be somewhat starting over again. For many people on Second Life, that is not new either. Several of us have had to start over on Second Life, for numerous reasons. Betrayals, failed relationships, altered company policies, stolen lands, poor company attitude... the list goes on and on. For most "old timer" SL users... starting over is nothing new.

Advantages:
* GREATLY REDUCED RENT. Regions are far less expensive there. This means it will cost us far less to operate Elf Clan on OpenLife. We WILL be passing those savings on to you in the form of GREATLY REDUCED COST rental lands! That will be a primary benefit to our members.
* Regions on OpenLife offer THREE TIMES THE PRIMS of Second Life-- 45,000 compared to 15,000. This means you will have a LOT more prims at your disposal.
* Adding to that prim expansion is the use of full-bore MEGAPRIMS up to 100m in size. Now you'll be able to build that castle floor in one single prim instead of 50. You'll be able to build a wall in one prim instead of four. This will greatly increase your "decorator prim" availability; you'll be able to use your prim allowance for better things than flat floors and walls.
* MICROPRIMS. This is of special interest to jewelry makers. Now you'll be able to make truly tiny prims and add detail to your work never before possible.
* LINK EXPANSIONS. The SL arbitrary 30m link limit has been abolished, making it possible to link items of large size. Imagine being able to build a 60m long spaceship as one linked object, or being able to link your entire castle and store it as one piece!
* IMPROVED TOOLS. OpenLife is not limited by corporate mindsets or agendas. That means their "features" are truly features-- designed for the good of the customer. Already there is an option in SNAPSHOTS to individually name each and every photo--or to simply allow the default name. This is something that will have the photographers among you leaping for joy.
* OFFICIAL ALTS. On OpenLife, you can set up "official alts". Why is this valuable? Because in the future, OpenLife will be allowing registered alts to SHARE INVENTORY. That means the no-copy tool you bought for your main avatar can also be used by any of your alts... just access that alt's inventory! There are many more uses for official alt registration that we will see in the future. This will likely be one of the most beneficial features to be implemented in the Open Grid system... and something we're really looking forward to.
* LACK OF CORPORATE PROFITEERING AND B.S. Sorry for being so non-PC... but we're just tired of the self-serving, price-gouging mentality. OpenLife is "BY users FOR users". That in itself is a refreshing breath of pure air.

There will be many more advantages coming along as OpenLife develops. Please remember to BE PATIENT, understand they're in GROWTH stages... and cheer them on. Try to not grow frustrated; simply realize it WILL get better-- and be patient. At $75 per region instead of $295... we can afford to be tolerant of growing pains. : )

WHY the Migration?
This decision was not our desire or choice. It was forced upon us by increasingly unfriendly corporate policies. This decision was brought about due to three primary reasons, in order of magnitude:

1. Linden Lab's continuing "price gouging" and monopolistic profiteering attitude, most recently manifested in their intended Open Space Sim price hike by 67% in July 2009. We are weary of the "bait and switch" methodology and the untrustworthiness of their way of doing business. It has gotten to the point we cannot by any means trust their promises or statements. When that becomes the case, it is time to switch companies. WE are the ones providing the creativity, the content and the money. If Linden Lab doesn't appreciate that, we will take our creativity, content and money elsewhere.

2. We are totally fed up with paying $295 per sim per month for a flakey, unstable, bug-ridden platform. We are tired of show-stopper class bugs that have continued on for years while Linden Lab has wasted time on eye-candy projects. When we pay new-car prices for virtual land, we expect new-car performance... not antiquated, beat-up jalopy. The time is long past for 40-second texture loads and crashing teleports and sim-crossings. We deserve better. We're paying for better. We demand better.

3. We're tired of corporate propaganda, customers being blamed for server-side and coding issues, and deceptive corporate hype. We are tired of a company attitude that focuses solely on the profit margin rather than the benefit of the customers. We are tired of the self-serving attitude that has emerged and continued and we are tired of the EXTREMELY CUSTOMER-UNFRIENDLY attitude that has increased significantly in recent months.

Second Life started out as a "dream" project... with the goal of becoming the second World Wide Web. Somewhere along the way they lost their path and their goal and became money focused. They failed to accomplish the dream. Now, someone else will step up and do that for them. Elf Clan wishes to be part of that. Thus, we are already establishing ourselves on the platform that we believe will help take VR into a new era. Like it says on the OpenLife Splash Page: "BY Users FOR Users." That's where we want to be.

Could you post a link to the third party inventory software? I'm going to miss my BareRose boots, but I was barefoot for years.
Wayfinder Wishbringer Comment by Wayfinder Wishbringer on December 2, 2008 at 12:38pm
Link to SecondInventory is:

SecondInventory.com

Do note that the software is a royal pain to use. It works, but you have to upload things one-item-at-a-time. But it's better than not being able to port items over at all.

Great Idea about posting a link for inventory software. I have been transferring what I can but I didn't know about this link. I am a consumate shopper so whatever I can salvage would be great.
Thank you so much for your insight, Wayfinder. While I don't comment much, I do read and keep up with your blogs. You are always so "RIGHT ON". I truly do appreciate and thank you for your directness. It means so much to have a place to go without all the sex stuff and harrassment that is now common almost anywhere in SL. All that trash should be confined to certan regions and not allowed as freely as it is. It is a real virus that keeps pushing all the good people out. I find very few places I can go now so I don't have to be exposed to it. It is very apparent that LL would rather have that XXX stuff than good clean places. Anyway, I thank you for giving me a place free and clear of all that.

Thanks for your comments SamariaSilk.

A note about SecondInventory: it is difficult and time consuming to use, and it will currently only back up FULL PERM items. That means a lot of inventory can't be transferred. Perhaps that will change in the future; there are debates on the forum going on even now about copyright and creator issues and what SI should and shouldn't back up. Hopefully they'll get their act together before long. If they don't... someone else surely will.

Of course I fully agree with your take on Second Life and the overwhelming "perv" factor of the system. I'm all for them being a "mature" board in order to keep out the truly immature elements. But mature doesn't mean perverse... and that is exactly what Second Life has become.

It didn't HAVE to be that way. Very popular online games control nudity and sexuality on their systems. They prove that the Linden Lab perv factor was not at all necessary. But Linden Lab has shown their true nature in these things and as a consequence... have earned themselves the professional reputation of being a sex board. Many businesses won't invest in the platform because of such things... and literally MILLIONS of users either ignore or have left Second Life because of such issues.

Linden Lab could have set reasonable boundaries. They could have zoned areas. They could have put their foot down and drawn a line and said "We absolutely will NOT allow perverted activities on our system." They didn't do so. They allowed AgePlay (until a government put ITS foot down), they allowed illegal gambling, they allow murder-rape groups and unrated display of all manner of vile things in even public stores. In short, Linden Lab allows things on SL that would absolutely not be accepted in RL society. The result is a virtual society that is without ethics, without morality, that is chaotic and frankly... that is crumbling.

I can only say one thing in this regard: Serves 'em right. They should have known that a society without morality and ethics, a society without social controls becomes quickly flooded with anarchy. The vile take over those not so, and those not so leave.

With their pitiful 25,000 regions and (comparatively pitiful) low profits, Second Life doesn't even come close to competitive online environments such as World of Warcraft. They could have. They could have been the hottest thing on the market. Instead, Linden Lab decided to go for perv. And in taking VR to the next level, to making it a second World Wide Web... they totally failed.

I also have an announcement to make. . .

As a business owner in SL (Image Productions Jewelry) I feel I have a responsibility to all of you who are making the switch to OLG. My items are almost all No Copy items. That presents a problem for people migrating. Therefore, for all my patrons and people who I have given items to . . .I will be providing you with full OLG equivalent items to any of my SL items you have. I will do this free of charge, (with donations accepted and appreciated.)

I am Mac based, and RL finances are incredibly tight now, so Second Inventory isn't possible for me. However - I will be making the move bit by bit and though it may take me some time to recreate things in OLG - we will work out some method of getting you your items.

I run my "business" in SL to keep me in pocket change there, not to become a baron. My biggest delight is seeing people wear the things I make -just because they like them. So as Wayfinder said . . I view this as a chance to start again, and to build again. I want all my past and future patrons to know I will support your new OLG life as I have supported your SL life.

I will not abandon my SL shop - and will keep my stall in the Elven Market for the foreseeable future. You can help by continuing to patronize the market and supporting me as you have in the past. You have my pledge the products you purchase will be ported, so shop without worry.

And before you ask - YES . . . the "Leaf of Lorien" and the "Elf Star" will be seen in OLG soon.

/me fully applauds Edward's statement... and seconds it. All DragonForge merchandise will be (as it becomes available on OLG) provided free of charge to existing customers. I have already ported over the Fyrefly and am working on adding the scripting. Other DragonForge items will be ported over as I have time. Doing so is a large and time-consuming project because SecondInventory is somewhat badly designed and cumbersome to use... but it is my full intent to eventually port over ever single DragonForge product. My customers will not be without their purchases on OLG. : )

Woohoo Edward!
Powers Constantine Comment by Powers Constantine on December 3, 2008 at 12:56pm
Edward and Eren have businesses that we all need to support. The statements they both have just made to honor our purchases even in OLG goes above and beyond the superior customer service they already provide. I hope that everyone will support, if you haven't already, both of these honorable businesses. This is a tremendous effort for our merchants to transport all their inventory over to OLG and then to still have their rl responsibilities. I still have a lot of time spent trying to log on to OLG with 75% of the time unsuccessful. Regardless, it will get better over time and worth the frustrations we are feeling now. It will be worth it in the end. So in ending---JUST RELAX AND GO SHOPPIN G IN OUR MARKET!!!!!!
Eren Padar Comment by Eren Padar on December 3, 2008 at 1:08pm
Just to says:
For those having trouble logging in to OLG and who crashes... please realizes it is still in development stages and that these things is expected.

Also, realize Second Life behaved exactly the same four years ago... when it had been online for a year. I think from what I've seen though, that OpenLife will be fixed lots faster than SL was and that within 6 months ot a year we'll see OpenLife fully operational with bugs greatly reduced... probably working even better than SL. That's worth our being laid back and tolerant of login problems, bugs and crashes.

A lot of the login problems right now are experienced from regular grid updates, which take about 2 hours. OLG doesn't have rolling updates installed yet, so when they update they try to do so in the early mornings before most people is online. But like Powers says, this should all improve over time.

hello all. i was wondering why openlifegrid.com was chosen over the others that are springing up. also, openlifegrid.com has no currency structure in place, correct? i'm glad to see that we may be able to import our SL inventory in the future as that is huge for me. i've spent a lot of money on SL and want to be able to take things with me. is there a universal avatar yet that can be used in multiple virtual worlds? i've read that people are working on it, but i don't know the status. i'd also like to say that SL started out by the users for the users as well. who's to say that openlifegrid.com will survive better? we'll find out i guess. i'm downloading openlife viewer R16_1 right now so i can check out the new land. :)
Wayfinder Wishbringer Comment by Wayfinder Wishbringer on December 3, 2008 at 5:54pm
Good and valid questions Nita.

We chose OpenLife for several reasons. A lot of SL people are going there, so we figured they had experienced the different grids enough to choose the best one. The prices were very reasonable. I had already been a member of OL for several months and had seen remarked improvements over that period of time. The owner, Sakai, seems very sincere and earnest. Thus, OpenLife.

As of yet, multiple worlds do not support interactive avatars... but it is on the list of "this would be great if we can do it". I would guess that most likely a multi-world economy is first on their mind in order to attract merchants (although IMO, I would love to see a grid motivated by reputation and generosity than another form of L$). I would say that eventually, world-hopping avatars are a possibility. Whether they ever come about or not is anyone's guess.

Yes, SL supposedly started out as by users for users... that was the claim... but that's a bit hard to believe since they came right out of the chute charging $195 apiece for sims. That's a profiteering level from the very start.

Whole world of difference in a company that's charging $75 per sim and that has proven time and again it is VERY attentive to its user needs and desires. I see a completely different attitude in OpenLife... and I'm hoping that attitude remains.

There's another major difference between Open Grid sims and SL: if one Open Grid company turns out to be jerks... there will be plenty around to compete with them. That's why they are more likely to be friendly, responsive and low-cost. Unlike Linden Lab during the last 5 years... Open Grid companies have competition. For that matter-- now Linden Lab does too. And since we really don't see LL changing their corporate-mentality, user-stabbing ways any time soon, we're rooting for Open Grid (and OpenLife in particular).

I don't know what Linden Lab perceives as their future, but what I perceive is a company some $14,500 a year less rich. ; )
