Distributed Denial-of-Service attack (DDoS attack): An attempt to flood an information server with repeated requests in order to make such resources unavailable to legitimate users.
The following is a word-for-word copy of a post on the Second Life pJIRA (their bug-reporting facility). I'm quoting it here because I couldn't have summarized it better myself.
The setting: I originally filed the post, citing severe texture loading problems and… Continue

For those who are just now catching up:
LL recently announced they will be increasing the price of Open Space Sims on Jan 1, 2009, from $75 to $125 a month... a 66% price increase.
The reason they gave: OSS are being "abused" by customers and are overly taxing grid resources.
They did not explain how increasing the price of sims will help reduce demands on such resources.
Elf Clan holds six OSS. This price gouging will cost our group (or more… Continue

Full research isn't in yet so it's just a little too early to be certain, but a user by the name of Balpien Hammerer, a consistently savvy poster on the LL JIRA bug-reporting system, may have just discovered a core-cause of Second Life performance degradation.
Following is a copy of his post, word for word.
[Addendum 11-6-2008: Balpien's findings have been… Continue

[2008/10/29 14:40] Peaches Latrell: Have you had any contact with LL and do you have any reason to believe they may modify this decision?

I've spoken with Peter Lioncourt on the Open Space Sim price-gouging issue. As I have previously stated, I am stepping back and totally supporting whatever decision he makes in this matter.
See reference: Open Space Bait and Switch
Peter's response to this policy change is presented here:
Official Elf Clan… Continue

Twice in the history of Linden Lab I have blown the lid off of corporate activities and claims. The first was when the company started stacking sims on server boxes without informing their customers. The second was when I exposed the primary source of lag being Linden Lab servers and software (rather than the "customer content" they constantly claimed). Today these things are widely recognized. Three years ago... such was news.
This is the third such case.
BLOWING THE… Continue

(Just so it's stated, and to alleviate any and all concerns and rumor, Elf Clan has no intent at this time of shutting down. What the future will bring because of the following stated developments remains to be seen, but Elf Clan has never been stronger. Don't panic! Life goes on. : )
IMPORTANT ADDENDUM 10-29-2008. See this blog post:
Just as I had… Continue

A new section has been added on the MAIN page, entitled "Current Events and Important Notes".
This section will contain information new and important to your SL experience. You may check that section daily to see if anything of import may need your immediate attention.
The CEIN section will most often contain info on new releases, bugs, fixes or other items that may affect your everyday use of SL.
You can find the CEIN section at the bottom of MAIN.

Camping: the act of leaving an avtar un-attended on Second Life, sitting in a ping-chair, for the sake of earning tiny amounts L$ over a period of time.
Camping on an average pays something like L$1 for every 10 to 20 minutes of time. Many camping areas have a limit of 30 L$ that can be gained that way, but some are unlimited.
This means that if you spend say, 8 hours camping while you sleep, you can earn a whole 48 L$.
Reality check #1: 48 L$ is… Continue

Every once in a while-- not very often-- I come across a company that does everything right. Now for me,that is something, because I have worked most my life as a Corporate Consultant / Watchdog / Software Engineer. I know from experience how to recognize serious problems within a company-- and usually how to fix them. That's how I earned my living.
So when a company demonstrates that it knows exactly what's going on, that it is savvy and customer friendly and smart-- that is frankly… Continue

People often blame Linden Lab for problems with Second Life... and quite often they're right. There are some serious company-side problems yet to be resolved.
However, it's not always Linden Lab. Knowing a little bit about how computers / the Net works, as well as the realization that there are a lot of variables in computer operation, can help us better understand and deal with problems on Second Life.
ERROR WHEN EXITING.
A recent example was an error message that… Continue

(Important note: See addendums in the comments section. Release 1.21 has some serious problems.)
Version 1.21.6 of the Second Life Client software is now released. Release notes are here:
1.21 Release Notes
This is the most extensive release I have seen... ever. It takes some 15 minutes just to read the release notes. These are not minor releases either. While the still-persistent slow-texture-loading has not… Continue

I decided today to archive most of my previous blogs. The reason is simple: their purpose is served and continued prominence might give people a negative wrong impression.
I have long been known as an advocate of SL users. I've often been involved (along with others) in SL/LL controversy when it comes to platform stability and company policies. My thoughts are documented and well-known.
But of late it occurs to me that this is all "small stuff" and really, of relatively… Continue

In reading these blogs, some may get the mistaken impression that Wayfinder is a doomcrier, that I'm anti-Linden Lab and anti-Second Life. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Ask yourself: when crewmembers were telling people on the Titanic that the ship was sinking, were they doomcriers? Were they anti-Titanic? Not at all. Although it's a historic fact that many people refused to believe the Titanic could sink-- even while it was doing so-- some were realistic enough to try to… Continue

Today I logged into this site with a startling surprize.... our missing Orc, Schlitzie, has reared his greenish head after months of conspicuous absense!
For those who dont' know Schlitzie, he is the founder of the WAAAGH!!! (number of A's and !!'s change with each posting)... the original Orc group on Second Life. The Waagh was set up sometime shortly after Elf Clan. As odd as it may seem, the orcs and elves became fast friends, a friendship that was to last through the most… Continue

Regardless of what fortune tellers and soothsayers will try to get us to believe, there is one outstanding fact of life: One cannot accurately foretell the future.
The future can be predicted, most certainly. But I am reminded of an old joke (religion aside): If you want to give God a chuckle, tell Him your plans.
It seems that no matter what we do, there are always things that change what we plan and hope for. That's where human adaptability and ingenuity comes in.… Continue

It is well known the first rule to seeking help for addiction is to admit the addiction is real. Most rehab organizations have a "12 question" survey to help people understand they are addicted. Answering yes to even one of the questions is strong indication of addiction. Answering yes to two or more is pretty much a certainty.
Here is a similar survey for those who fear they may be addicted to Second Life:
* Disclaimer: this is not a validated psychological survey. It is… Continue
