When you're through reading, you can give it a try...
Linden Lab has a long history of public relations, with expert implementation of spin, hype and reality-bending to accomplish purposes and obfuscate data. Recently the company asked for folks to apply as user-based media contacts, folks who can join them in their positive-presentation of the board.
Using their example of spin and "read between the lines" publication, I thought I… Continue

The Immersive Education Initiative, a widely-known international community of educators, has issued an official statement in regard to the recent Second Life TOS
Says Areon E. Walsh, Director of the Immersive Education initiative:
"We need clarity, authoritative clarity, on these issues immediately
. Our global community of nearly 3,000 educators,
responsible for millions of students worldwide, is uncertain as to the short- and long-term impact that the new Second… Continue

COPYRIGHTS, FEDERAL LAW and COMMON SENSEA brief, simple-language examination of copyright concepts as they pertain to Second life.
With the introduction of the new SL TOS (April 30, 2010), there is a lot of discussion about what is / isn't allowed, what is and isn't legal, and what rights people do or don't have. We've also seen some degree of panic that is common when people don't know enough about… Continue

I have to say, there have been some pretty astounding movies released recently.
It seemed that for a long time, movies had just gone downhill. Everything was eye candy and flash and zero story. Some movies were just plain awful. But in the last few years we've seen some good stuff. Thought I'd mention a few just for fun.HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON
This is the surprising win this year. Every once in a while a movie comes out that just… Continue

Update on Elf Clan Social Network on NING.
As most of you are aware, NING, the host of this blogsite, has announced cessation of their free service and will be charging a whopping $120 a year as of mid July. This is of course, untenable for non-profit groups and individuals... especially since other sites are offering the same service free of charge.
At this time we are looking for another blogsite to host the Elf Clan
Social Network.… Continue

THERE ARE ALWAYS CONSEQUENCES
Most people who have been around a few decades realize a very important fact of life: There are always consequences for decisions and actions.
Note I don't say "sometimes". I don't say "maybe".
Now, some people may claim that's not the case, and there's no sense in arguing the point with them. They are welcome to do what they want, and of course, face the consequences of not believing there are… Continue

" [The new TOS] is far more abusive, infringes far more on user legal rights, and
even imposes into areas of Federal Copyright law... something I feel pretty sure Linden Lab is going to have brought to their attention the hard way."
-- Wayfinder Wisbgringer, April 6, 2010, "The New Iron Curtain"
Just a few weeks after the above prediction, Linden Lab has been served with a FEDERAL class-action… Continue

Has anyone ever stopped to view things from Linden Lab's perspective?
I know coming from me, that may be a rather surprising question. But let's take a "give the guy a break" position, set paranoia and conspiracy theories aside, and take a look at several Second Life issues from a different direction.
Let me assure you I am by no means turning pro-Linden Lab. This article consists of sheer speculation, "fly on the wall" type stuff.… Continue

Poll website: VIEWER 2 POLL
Amanda Linden ran a poll on Viewer 2. As Pan comments, the poll was obviously slanted to be in favor of Viewer 2. While I'm sure Linden Lab was hoping to be vindicated in release of that viewer, here are the results:
On a separate, larger poll on a different page, here were the results:… Continue

NING CEO POURS SAND IN THE GEARS
NING.COM is the host of our Elf Clan Social Network.
It seems Second Life
is not the only company plagued by new CEO problems. NING has fired the majority of their employees and has decided to now start charging all users for the Ning service (what... the numerous advertisements all over our blogsite wasn't sufficient to pay for the service?)
Ning has rocked up to
this point. Good service.… Continue

One of my pet pastimes is predicting the future. No, I don't use some crystal ball, or divining rods or other means. I simply look at current facts, trends and concepts and project those along foreseeable lines. In most cases I do so with fair accuracy... the only glitch being the amount of time involved. Sometimes I short-cast, sometimes I overcast. But despite the time involved, the end result is the same.
So I've been wondering about the future of VR. I will openly admit that's a… Continue

A note to all members of Elf Clan and associated bloggers:FORMATTING PROBLEM
There is currently a "formatting bug" on Ning which causes paragraphs to place extra line feeds at random places while editing. This manifests itself especially during copy/pasting... but also at random other times without identifiable cause.
Ning has been contacted. They've forwarded the bug to the techs. We'll see what happens. In the past Ning has always… Continue

A CHANGE IN FOCUS
I once told Linden Lab that as long as users spoke out, so long as people provide feedback- whether it is positive or negative- they need have no fear. Feedback means people care. It means they have some hope the company can still change, grow and improve. But if they grow silent, if they stop providing such feedback, it means they have found management to be beyond hope, have lost all faith in the company and are simply taking… Continue

After having some time to re-examine the new SL TOS and reading insights from other informed and astute users, I've come to understand the new SL TOS is a not-so-craftily worded attempt by Linden Lab to take over absolutely everything on their system... including user properties.
I do not exaggerate one bit. What we are seeing is a virtual Iron Curtain mentality, in which Linden Lab considers all property as belonging to the company (regardless of what they publicize). The TOS… Continue

Quotes are presented on a "most recent, first shown" basis.
"I fully expect before the year is out, that LL will drop yet another bomb

"This lament by residents was novel and revolutionary as a concept in 2004; it was a hallmark of persistence and determination by 2006; by 2008 it was a sign of masochism; by 2010 it is a diagnosis of a unstable and co-dependent personality… Continue

TURNING POINT --
An Open Letter to the Second Life Community
What are our rights as users of Second Life? How far can Linden Lab push the fact that they own Second Life? Where do their rights end... and ours begin?
In this paper we ask some very pertinent questions and provide what we hope to be a very valid illustration. Your rights are being abused. Your property is being confiscated. "Your world" is no longer your world. We all… Continue

Today Koni, one of our head Greeters, could not log in to Second Life. She was told the connection could not be made. She was
interestingly enough, able to log in to Inworldz, indicating that either a primary Internet line was offline... or that some area of SL was malfunctioning, preventing logging in for a significant number of users.
Koni filed a support ticket under the heading, "Can't Log In" and told them what was going on. This was the… Continue

Does Linden Lab care about customer opinion? Do they realize the immense asset they have in their customer base?
The beginning of this blog is going to sound like blowing my own horn. I'm not. I'm stating simple facts. The end of this blog will reveal why.
* I am an early-retired professional consultant with some 25+ years of
experience in the corporate field. I worked for almost three decades helping companies improve their process. Linden Lab is not unaware of… Continue
