LINUX READY FOR PRIME TIME-- ALMOST

Several years ago I experimented with Linux. While the operating system was powerful, the experience overall was less than satisfying. Compatibility factors, bugs, unfriendly interfaces... it just didn't rock my boat.

Over the years I've kept up somewhat with Linux-- and have watched it grow from fledgling product to full-bore industry standard. Today, Fortune 500 companies are recognizing immense savings by installing Linux instead of Windows. Second Life itself is in fact, run on a… Continue

FIRST REACTIONS TO VIEWER 2.0

Today Linden Lab released the BETA version of Viewer 2.0. Personally I don't consider it beta. It is more like Alpha software that has been released on the main grid for customers to test out and debug. It still has a long way to go before I would consider it an acceptable and useful product.

The most telling thing about this viewer is that in group discussions (not just Elf Clan, but other groups) the response has been largely negative. What I saw were not people who were angry… Continue

ELF CLAN DAILY BLIP

"Follow" this post for regular updates.

Sometimes we have something we want to share, but it doesn't really warrant its own blog page.

Twitter allows posting small chat-bytes. Problem: 140 characters waaay too short... and it's not permanent.

So I thought we'd start a special mini-blog here in the form of short-clip comments... items too short to warrant their own blog but still worth posting.

From… Continue

KILLING THE GOLDEN GOOSE

Elf Clan member Kylinn Leimes recently cited a blog page titled "WhoseTube", in which a member of a band explains how their record company for no reasons other than sheer greed, via legal paranoia dropped their sales right through the floor. In that article, I noticed a lot of correlations between that record label and Linden Lab, so felt it was worth writing a blog demonstrating how a company can be self-destructive by attempting to… Continue

IS LNDEN LAB RUNNING 8 SIMS TO A SERVER BOX?

Hey everyone, I was just handed a URL and would like to present it for examination and discussion. If this pans out to be true... this is quite alarming. It also goes a long way toward explaining the intensely increased lag over the past couple of months.

Claim: LL is now running EIGHT sims per server: …

OPEN LETTER TO MARK KINGDON, CEO SL

I recently watched a short interview with Mark Kingdon, CEO of Linden Lab (Second Life). That interview is here:

My general impression of this interview was positive. As expected, Mark is somewhat charismatic and from visible appearances, a likable person.… Continue

WAYFINDER PREDICTIONS FOR 2010-- and beyond

I thought I'd have a little fun here and post a few predictions for 2010 in regard to Linden Lab, Second Life and VR in general. I did so back in 2008 and the predictions were eerily accurate. I have no crystal ball of course... but I have historically had the knack of pegging SL to the wall. So we'll see over the next year or two if that trend continues. : )

Fair note: don't expect this blog to be polite, politically correct or to pull any punches.… Continue

LINDEN HOMES-ANOTHER JADED BLOG

Linden Lab has announced the release of "Linden Homes"... pre-designed and pre-built homes available to Premium users on their 512m start-up land plot. LL has always included 512m of land with premium membership. But now they're throwing in a ready-made home with the package.

"We are providing Linden Homes because we want to help residents to experience the benefits of owning their own home in Second Life. Land can be complicated for new and existing… Continue

THE END OF THE DESKTOP

I was visiting the local computer store today, and witnessed what I consider to be the beginning of the end of the desktop:

SONY LAPTOP

16" screen

Blu-Ray drive

8 gigs RAM

I-7 quad-core processor

Nvidia 340 graphics card (the new GeForce that runs much faster than existing graphics cards)

500 gig hard drive

Full-size keyboard with numeric pad

$1,350

The laptop computer described above is more powerful… Continue

IS XSTREETSL KILLING IN-WORLD SALES?

They should have left it alone. They should have let it continue in third-party hands.

Last year, Linden Lab bought the SLX web-based market and re-named it XstreetSL. There has been much controversy around that acquisition.

At face value it seemed like a wise move: set up a nice shopping area where people don't have to deal with lag, where they can shop quickly and hopefully-- profitably-- without having to skip from store to store in-world. Tie that in directly to Second… Continue

LOOKING BACK ON PREDICTIONS--NOVEMBER 2008

In November 2008 I made some predictions regarding Linden Lab. It's only fair since more than a year has passed, to look back on those predictions and see how they proved out.

WAYFINDER PREDICTIONS-- November 2008

It's pretty apparent Linden Lab is out of touch with their own system and its users. So I'm going to go out on a limb here and make a… Continue

Good Decisions... Bad Decisions-- sigh...

Linden Lab announced today they will no longer be "grandfathering" Homestead sims on transfers.

Currently, "grandfathered" Homestead sims bear a fee of $95 a month instead of $125. Up until now, that grandfathered price would transfer to a new owner with the transfer of the sim. That is no longer the case. Now, the sim price will go up to $125 upon transfer. It causes us to wonder how long it will be before they decide to cancel grandfathering entirely.…

LINDEN LAB GETS IT RIGHT!

2-12-2010 UPDATE: Kudos retracted. See comments section for details. This post is being left here for historical value, but as of this date, is fairly invalid due to recent Linden Lab actions.

There is something we've been waiting for now since Second Life went online. It is something we have especially been waiting on for the last two or so years: proper texture handling.
