XSTREETSL BOYCOTT: JANUARY 1, 2010
I am loathe to post this blog. After all the feedback received from merchants and customers, one would think even Linden Lab would take notice, but apparently such is not the case.
It is reported on the official blog that despite the thousands of posts from merchants (ranging from astounded to negative to irate to fuming)... Linden Lab is planning to pursue its stated path with XstreetSL (see related blog posts). They are sticking with their decisions,…

This article is a professional discussion of business ethics, methods of earning profit, and responsibility to the community. Perhaps it is a subject a little dry for some. For others, it may assist in providing a foundation upon which to build a solid, reputable future. In the best of circumstance, it may wake up some entities to the poor course they have chosen-- and bring about a change for the better.
Wayfinder's Rules of Success
A company should never pursue profit when doing so…

A few years back, Microsoft was taken to task by European courts as a monopolistic entity. It was decided that their including Windows Media System as a part of Windows was unfair competition to companies that provided media solutions as professional packages. The argument: Windows is an operating system. Media presentation is a different concept. Microsoft was found guilty of employing monopolistic practices. As a result, Windows packages sold in Europe may no longer contain media components.…

DEVELOPING A "THEME" ROLE IN ELF CLAN
This article is designed to help you develop your own special role in Elf Clan. Please read
ROLE PLAYING IN ELF CLAN first to get a better understanding of "role playing" in our group:
THEME vs ROLE PLAYING
Elf Clan is a "theme" group. That means that instead of full-bore role playing with rules and requirements, we are a group of individuals who contribute to the…

"Arrogance is bad. Humility is good." -- a universal truth
JESUS, GOREANS AND ELF CLAN
As one can see from the title, this may be one of my more off-beat blogs. I will admit in advance this is a fairly long blog; the concepts here cannot justly be stated in 25 words or less.
I am in my middle-years, retired 15 years early (hubba hubba) and have time now to contemplate Life, the Universe and Everything. Lately I've found myself becoming both introspective and extro-spective, exam…

In a recent blog announcement, Linden Lab has announced they will begin charging for freebies on XstreetSL (XSL). The announcement is here:
NEW CHARGES ON XSTREETSL
Typical of such, many are calling these decisions knee-jerk, arbitrary half-solutions to admittedly real problems.
THE PROBLEMS ARE REAL ENOUGH
Linden Lab is correct about the situation:
* Freebies a…

I was speaking with Merlin today, and it was mentioned how nice it would be to have some SL abilities in RL. But then the more I thought about it, I started to wonder. So...
IF REAL LIFE WERE LIKE SECOND LIFE...
* We could all fly, which would be fantastic. However, we would regularly see people splatting into the sides of buildings and crashing into doorways. Fortunately, injuries from such would be nonexistent.
* You could fall from great heights, get up, dust yourself off and move a…

Many people ask about Role Playing in Elf Clan. In truth, we do have such, but it's so subtle that most people aren't aware of it. We have several members that role play on a regular basis. Some have Alts, and their role totally changes depending on which Alt they are using. In our group, RP is highly individual, unpredictable, and somewhat unique.
Second Life Somewhat Prohibits Good RP
The truth is that Second Life isn't really all that conducive to proper role playing. The 24/7/365 nat…

This blog is a frank discussion that has to do not only with Sex in America but world-wide. I just chose America because this is where I live, I know this society, and I'm acquainted with the social moors and habits here.
I've been wanting to write this for some time, but didn't quite know how to approach it. I hope I've finally hit on the right direction. This will be a fairly frank discussion of societal sexuality as I see it. My blog page, my views. Fair position. Comments are welcome. : )…

In preparation for our Anniversary Celebration this weekend, I went to the Events listing to search for our events.
The entire Events listing has changed. Now, instead of a nice, neat, useful event listing, I found 2,373 events... listed 15 items at a time. There is no search feature. You can't declare a time range to search for.
Could that listing possibly be more useless?
One has to wonder. We have a company the size and
supposed expertise of Linden Lab... that has a fairly useless e…

Just for something different, I thought it might be interesting to philosophize on the concept of
independence.
Over the last month, it seems I have heard several times someone saying, "I'm an independent person". This is always said proudly, as if it's a good thing.
Most folks would consider independence to be a good thing... and to a moderate extent, it is. But I thought we might look at the flip side of the coin and see if it's really all as great as society seems to think it is.
We…

Peter will possibly ork-club me for posting this, but...
I wanted to publicly acknowledge and thank Peter Lioncourt for everything he has done for Elf Clan.
As most know, Peter is one of our Eldars. He was not one of the founders of the group; he earned that title by continuous loyalty, honor and love for this group. It is not a title granted lightly or on a whim... nor was it one he requested or expected. In the time he has held that post he has never once abused its status. I have never regr…

Following is a summary, reminder and additional information for all Greeters. Those who are not Greeters may just ignore it (which I know will insure you'll read it... and thus keep informed about Greeter activities. :D)
ITEM 1: MONTHLY REZDAY EVENTS
Zephyre Sheridan will be hosting a monthly "Rezday Event". A group our size cannot recognize the rezdays of everyone individually, nor do we wish to make any feel left out. So instead of individual rezday parties... we'll just hold one big b…

PREQUEL:
I sent a copy of this blog to Microsoft as feedback regarding Wiindows 7. Here is the official response I got from the company, word for word:
"Thank you for contacting Microsoft Online Customer Service.
I apologize that you are not satisfied with your experience with Microsoft.
As you know that this is a highly intellectual product and a lot of expertise that goes into it, and such it is not possible to get the product for free.
Please let me know if there is anything else I…

A member reports recently buying a skin and shape set for L$200... something that was thought to be a pretty good deal. Indeed it would have been-- if the items hadn't turned out to be freebies the user already owned... freebies that had been renamed and sold under false pretenses.
In ideal situations this would be an exception to the rule and a reportable offense. At one time, selling free items was against Second Life policy. Somewhere along the line, that rule was removed. One has to wonder…

As most of us know, Second Life sims cost a pricey $295 per month (not to mention the significant "setup fee"). If users are in Europe they are charged VAT and pay $350 a month.
Now let's pause to consider... what could we buy for $295 to $350? Here's a list of some nice things I found:
NETBOOK COMPUTER

As the title of this blog indicates, this is going to be a frank discussion of Linden Lab blunders and why Second Life isn't running properly. I'll be discussing several issues-- things that should have been long corrected by the company and for whatever reason, have not. I'm also presenting a new concept-- a new step that needs to be taken to improve survival of the product.
A friend made a statement two days ago as of this writing:
"Every release, Linden lab fixes some things and borks even m…

A basic discussion of some of the core concepts of Elf Clan.
* Honor * Respect * Friendship*
These are the three "prime-directives" of Elf Clan. These concepts have served us well. But at times they also force us to take a strong stance against those who choose to not exhibit these traits.
NOT JUST LIP SERVICE
In Elf Clan the concept of Honor is not just a lip-service, role-play device. We believe in it to our core. That honor demands that we treat others with respect, patience…

Greetings all, but not glad tidings.
Months ago I reported time inconsistencies involved with the MONO system and recommended that for most less-intensive scripting, coders stick with LsL basic. Little did I know how right-on-the-button that blog would prove to be.
Please read the following external blog:
MONO CAUSING INTENSE STAND-STILL LAG
At this time, under the current situation, Elf Cla…

Another grid has decided to adopt the policy of PG-only: New World Grid, based in France.
This is particularly interesting, as France is known for their more relaxed view regarding nudity in general.
Today, New World (http://Newworldgrid.com) announced it was switching to PG-only, with the stipulation that special requests could be made to the administrators for projects such as art shows which might contain items not strictly PG. Even then though, such shows must obtain special permission. Th…
