CONNECTING TO REACTION GRID

REACTION GRID is an Open Sim virtual world external to Second Life. It is not operated or controlled by Linden Lab. RG offers more powerful building tools and far lower prices than SL. It is a builder's paradise.

HOME SIM: Elf Haven

THE ADVANTAGES

Low cost, better building tools (such as megaprims), peace and quiet.

THE DISADVANTAGES

It's still in development stage so there are bugs. But then... there are bugs on SL too. So… Continue

I LIVE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!

I've had two previous blog posts about my experiments with OpenSimulator, starting with this one that gave snapshots of my sims: http://elfclan.ning.com/profiles/blogs/building-with-opensimulator

I later posted about how I lost my builds when I performed an update: http://elfclan.ning.com/profiles/blogs/down-the-drain

Things have changed some, however. Last week I rented a $20 virtual private server through the company fsckVPS. Then, me and a friend got a sim set up on… Continue

LINDEN LAB MEASURING TOOLS MALFUNCTIONING

LINDEN LAB MEASURING TOOLS MALFUNCTIONING

With the advent of "Ghosted Scripts" (scripts that remain functioning on a sim when the prim is deleted) and talks at Linden Lab regarding limiting scripting on a parcel basis, I decided to start tracking script operations on our sims. What I've discovered is that the script measurement tools themselves appear to be unreliable, the results inconsistent. I present evidence of such here.

Only ESTATE MANAGERS can measure the… Continue

An Open Offer / Challenge to Linden Lab

I was chatting with a friend last night about the current deplorable state of Second Life, abusive customer policies, and continued degrading performance of the grid.

My friend suggested: "Why don't you make Linden Lab an offer to fix Second Life and see what they do?"

We both had a good laugh at that. But the more I thought about it, the more it became less laughable. I suppose it's somewhat humorous from the aspect of Linden Lab actually admitting anything is wrong or… Continue

3D - Virtual Reality meets Imaginary Reality

When you look at everything around you in SL you are actually looking at a 3d virtual world, but you knew that didn't you? 3D vitual worlds have been with us and we with them for a very long time now. You only have to think about computer/video games to realise that, but the difference with SL is that you interact with it on a level far beyond the simple car chase/shoot-em-up/Doom games of the past.

ElvenMyst is one small part of a 3D World - you knew that too - but in another part… Continue

Virtual Worlds Have Nothing on This

If any of us think we can't possibly live without our virtual environment, visit this site. It contains two LIVE cameras trained on an Eagle's nest. How often do you get to see something like this?

EAGLE LIVE CAM

There are lots and lots of things that RL has to offer. Sometimes SL causes us to lose track of what's going on around us. Things like this serve as good remiders. No virtual eagle will ever be this… Continue

Proof it COULD Have Been Fixed-- and Wasn't

Many people are well aware of the texture load issues on Second Life. We know these issues have gone on for years... and increased exponentially in 2008 when Linden Lab created a denial-of-service attack on their own servers-- and failed to fix it.

It is documented fact (admitted by LL's own Dan Linden) that some 80% of all textures on Second Life take more than 30 seconds to load. That is inexcusable performance. While Linden Lab has claimed that this is a "very difficult problem to… Continue

Business 101 Linden Lab Style-- How to Tick Off Your Customers

See original blog post here:

Business 101 Linden Lab Style

Two stories that I think will shock you. Then LL wonders why people aren't more supportive.

Now THIS is what Fantasy Footbal should be: BLOOD BOWL

I like to keep track of games in development, and here's one I've been keeping track of...Blood Bowl!

BLOOD BOWL WEBSITE

This was one of my favorite table-top strategy games, and it seems the company developing it has kept faithful to the humor. It is based on Games Workshop's Warhammer Fantasy world, tho not specificly part of the canon...more of a tongue-in-cheeck approach. It's fantasy warfare meets American… Continue

Procedural Content Generation

Late last year, shortly before the openspace shangri-lala started, me and a friend of mine, Draconis Burns, were talking of ways to implement an alternative to SecondLife. We spoke about using a few engines as a base, such as Sauerbraten and Irrlicht. The thoughts were eventually dropped. However, one idea that I came up with during the discussion was the use of procedural content generation.

What is it? It's a system of algorithms designed for dynamically generating content for a… Continue

Down the Drain

For a month or so, I was working on a few builds with OpenSimulator. The past month I've taken a break from that to be in SecondLife. However, this morning I installed an update for OpenSimulator, and accidentally wiped out everything. No problem, I figured, since I had been making backups of my sims by using OAR backups (Opensim ARchive). It did not work. All of the builds that used sculpties were completely wiped out (the mystic spring and the caves). Only two of my builds remained.… Continue

MAKING WISER INVESTMENTS

THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE

For quite some time now, I and others have pointed out that Linden Lab has ignored the essential elements that would help Second Life to grow and become what it had every right to become. Instead of core foundation issues, the company has consistently favored eye-candy toys and gizmos.

Recently I went on record here stating that-- unless LL cleans up their act and engages in some serious policy changes-- I don't expect them to last more than a year… Continue

Linden Lab Loses out on Education

LINDEN LAB LOSES OUT ON EDUCATION

As almost everyone is aware, several months ago Linden Lab shot themselves in both feet and both kneecaps when they raised the price on Open Space sims. We've discussed this here extensively. As of mid-February, more than 5,500 such sims had closed down due to a 27% price hike, a result of customers for once having the courage to stand up and say NO. (Elf Clan itself is shutting down 6 such sims, 3 of which have already closed). July 1, when a… Continue

Typing Animation

It is my personal choice not to use typing animations. I think my own Av's looks aweful so I was very pleased to find a way to turn it off. However, as pasted below, for some people, seeing an AV type is important to them.

My question then is, what is a 'scripted type replacer'

Thank you for reading.

* TYPING SOUNDS and animations are being turned off by many people. This is a personal choice. However, please be aware that the typing sound and animation… Continue
