"Policy should be directed by common sense. If you leave a cookie on the table when a dwagon is nearby, it ceases being your cookie."
"Don't worry about the money. Put your customers first, make them happy, and the money will follow."
"Linden Lab is not bulletproof, nor are they magically immune to the danger of competition. That competition isn't just coming... it's already here. And it's already costing Linden Lab hundreds of thousands of dollars a month. Right here. Right now. And it hasn't even got up a head of steam yet."
"Never put a visionary in charge of a company. Let them come up with the ideas. Never put a tech in charge of a company. Let them accomplish the ideas. Put a businessman in charge of business... and put the customer in charge of the businessman."
"Once you remove greed and ego as factors, what remains is progress."
"There is nothing more irritating than a person who doesn't know what he's talking about-- except of course a person who does."
"Avoid letting things in life upset you. It's useless to curse at a rock. The rock doesn't care and it's not gonna move."
"It's the little things that count. The difference between functional and non-functional code is one byte."
"I do not support RL pimps or pedophiles; I will not tolerate virtual ones."
"If people act like sheep, they will surely be fleeced."
"People don't like thinking beyond the immediate. It causes stress, and often results in the undeniable need for further action."
"Censorship is not of itself a bad thing. It's the glue that keep society from degrading into chaos. A lack of censorship brings anarchy. Those who fail to censor themselves or be censored-- are sociopaths. "
"There are always
consequences for actions. Sometimes they are slow in coming... but they do eventually come. It is better to change one's own path and have no regrets, than to continue on a wrong course and have such change forced upon us. The methods of consequence are not as gentle as our own."
"The last time I checked, World of Warcraft had 11.5 million customers... each paying some $15 a month to play the game. Quick math: 11.5 million x $15 = $172.5 million per month. Linden Lab: appx $5 million per month. Relatively speaking, Linden Lab doesn't even come close to being financially successful in the computer field."
"If someone came to you in RL and offered you a car that was rust eaten, clunky and with no guarantees for $1000 down and $295 a month... would you buy it? We might pay that for a new car that purred like a kitten, but surely not for a backfiring rustbucket. Make wise investments."
"Many people believe that a profitable business is a successful business. I say it's how you earn the profit that makes you successful, not the profit itself. The Mafia is profitable. Only the lowest of people would consider them successful."
"Some people claim that Jesus Christ and Muhatma Ghandi died as financially poor, misguided fools. I have news for them: people die, both rich and poor. I seriously doubt today's richest men will be remembered 2,000 years from now, or that billions of people will still follow their every word."
"No matter how fancy the decor in your restaurant... it's the food that will keep people coming back."

"We should always respect our elders. I don't have to respect anyone."
"The ignorant man simply doesn't know. There is no shame in that. The stupid man knows, and does so anyway. There is no excuse for that."
-- my father
"I can afford to buy the biggest steak I can eat. How much more does a man need?"
-- Richard (an old friend)
"You want to be profitable in the restaurant business? Charge customers a reasonable amount, and give them more food than they can eat."
-- Robert (another friend)

"Despite the cost of living, have you noticed how popular it remains?"
(Comment: I think this applies as greatly to virtual worlds as it does the real world-- and explains why worlds such as Second Life remain "popular" despite serious problems. The option is to exit -- which for many isn't an attractive alternative. So they just tolerate the irritations and like real life... just keep plugging along. The sad thing is... SL doesn't have to be in this condition. It's a shame that so many fixable problems still exist.)
