Greetings from Wayfinder!

Greetings all, and Welcome!

Wayfinder quotes:
"Policy should be directed by common sense. If you leave a cookie on the table when a dwagon is nearby, it ceases being your cookie."

"Don't worry about the money. Put your customers first, make them happy, and the money will follow."

"Linden Lab is not bulletproof, nor are they magically immune to the danger of competition. That competition isn't just coming... it's already here. And it's already costing Linden Lab hundreds of thousands of dollars a month. Right here. Right now. And it hasn't even got up a head of steam yet."

"Never put a visionary in charge of a company. Let them come up with the ideas. Never put a tech in charge of a company. Let them accomplish the ideas. Put a businessman in charge of business... and put the customer in charge of the businessman."

"Once you remove greed and ego as factors, what remains is progress."

"There is nothing more irritating than a person who doesn't know what he's talking about-- except of course a person who does."

"Avoid letting things in life upset you. It's useless to curse at a rock. The rock doesn't care and it's not gonna move."

"It's the little things that count. The difference between functional and non-functional code is one byte."

"I do not support RL pimps or pedophiles; I will not tolerate virtual ones."

"If people act like sheep, they will surely be fleeced."

"People don't like thinking beyond the immediate. It causes stress, and often results in the undeniable need for further action."

"Censorship is not of itself a bad thing. It's the glue that keep society from degrading into chaos. A lack of censorship brings anarchy. Those who fail to censor themselves or be censored-- are sociopaths. "

"There are always consequences for actions. Sometimes they are slow in coming... but they do eventually come. It is better to change one's own path and have no regrets, than to continue on a wrong course and have such change forced upon us. The methods of consequence are not as gentle as our own."

"The last time I checked, World of Warcraft had 11.5 million customers... each paying some $15 a month to play the game. Quick math: 11.5 million x $15 = $172.5 million per month. Linden Lab: appx $5 million per month. Relatively speaking, Linden Lab doesn't even come close to being financially successful in the computer field."

"If someone came to you in RL and offered you a car that was rust eaten, clunky and with no guarantees for $1000 down and $295 a month... would you buy it? We might pay that for a new car that purred like a kitten, but surely not for a backfiring rustbucket. Make wise investments."

"Many people believe that a profitable business is a successful business. I say it's how you earn the profit that makes you successful, not the profit itself. The Mafia is profitable. Only the lowest of people would consider them successful."

"Some people claim that Jesus Christ and Muhatma Ghandi died as financially poor, misguided fools. I have news for them: people die, both rich and poor. I seriously doubt today's richest men will be remembered 2,000 years from now, or that billions of people will still follow their every word."

"No matter how fancy the decor in your restaurant... it's the food that will keep people coming back."

Favorite quotes:
"Some people are so open-minded their brains fall out."
-- Rick Warren

"All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent."
-- Thomas Jefferson.

"Only a fool continues in the same destructive course, expecting the outcome to somehow be different."
-- paraphrase from popular ancient folk wisdom

"The way things are going in fashion, there will soon be nothing left for prostitutes to wear."
-- Bill Maher

"We should always respect our elders. I don't have to respect anyone."
-- Anonymous

"The ignorant man simply doesn't know. There is no shame in that. The stupid man knows, and does so anyway. There is no excuse for that."
-- my father

"I can afford to buy the biggest steak I can eat. How much more does a man need?"
-- Richard (an old friend)

"You want to be profitable in the restaurant business? Charge customers a reasonable amount, and give them more food than they can eat."
-- Robert (another friend)

"When I hear somebody sigh, 'Life is hard', I am always tempted to ask: Compared to what?”
-- Sydney Harris

"Always deal honestly with others, then you won't have to worry about lies coming back to haunt you."
-- my father

"“Life is too important to be taken seriously.”
-- Oscar Wilde

"A word to the wise ain't necessary - it's the stupid ones that need the advice."
-- Bill Cosby

"Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway."
alternate: "Nobody gets out of life alive."
-- Author unknown

"I like cats. I just can't eat a whole one by myself."
-- Author unknown

"Whatever a man is sowing, this he shall also reap."
-- Jesus Christ

"Despite the cost of living, have you noticed how popular it remains?"
-- Anonymous.

(Comment: I think this applies as greatly to virtual worlds as it does the real world-- and explains why worlds such as Second Life remain "popular" despite serious problems. The option is to exit -- which for many isn't an attractive alternative. So they just tolerate the irritations and like real life... just keep plugging along. The sad thing is... SL doesn't have to be in this condition. It's a shame that so many fixable problems still exist.)

Glad to see you here Zek. Hoping this system is a lot of fun for our members and helps them more easily keep track of what's going on in Elf Clan. : )

Its wonderful to see that someone with such a high level of expertise is exposing the issues of SL and looking out for those of us with so little expertise. Thanks Wayfinder :)

Hi Hod. Was a comment off the top of my head, but one I believe holds true universally. Freedom without governance is anarchy, which brings about chaos. To experience true freedom, one must have reasonable rules. A society without ethical limitations ceases to be a society.

(Oh, and feel free to borrow. :D)

Actually Doc, that's entirely a possibility within a year or so. With Open Sim progressing even faster than their planned schedule, all sorts of VR possibilities are going to crop up. The great thing about open Sim will be INTERACTIVE INVENTORY (being able to port inventory as well as avatars from one Open Sim company to another). That means we could actually be independent of any company (just using a general server grid to provide the basic tech service) and form our own independent policies-- the same policies that have made Elf Clan so popular to date-- the policies that are the supposed foundation even other major Elven groups on Second Life today. That Elf Clan could become totally independent within a year or so is a very real possibility. Frankly, it would be a shame that we would have to but like you, I am very tired of being under a self-serving corporate thumb. Since I really don't see any indication of LL changing its ways (in fact, if anything I see the corporate policies getting worse)... your concept is a very real possibility.

When Open Sim hits, I expect it to be big... and it will likely be the Open Sim project -- and not Linden Lab-- that changes the face of VR. While I'm sure LL will take credit for it, it will have to be remembered that if LL had done things right, Open Sim would have never been necessary.

Hi Topaz. There is currently a major problem on OpenLife that they're working hard to fix: teleporting from one region to a region that is offline crashes the original region. They're aware of this and working on it, but the downside is that regions are crashing in a chain-effect. The best thing to do is just keep trying to log in every hour or two, and see if the region is back up or not. Our regions are ElvenMyst, ElvenGlen and Terra, with ElvenMyst and ElvenGlen being the "Elf Clan" regions.

As are we Terrence. Lots of problems to be sure-- but lots of freedoms to make up for them. I've heard several comments lately in the form of: "Once you build on OLG you don't want to go back to SL". I have to agree with that one in particular. The platform is assuredly unstable at this time... but that will be fixed just as it was (to a degree) fixed on SL. In the meantime, the financial and feature benefits are worth patience with the flaws. Like you, looking forward to watching it grow and hopefully-- prove itself to be a better system overall.
